Grimm's Fairy Tales

Penguin Design Awards 2012 | 'Grimm's Fairy Tales'

The goal for this brief was to design the book cover for 'Grimm's Fairy Tales' by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. The influence for the design was from a quote taken from the introduction of the book: "...opened once again the gateway of fairyland to children."

I though that reflecting this idea of "the gateway to fairyland" was the best way to group all of the tales as one. The Brother's Grimm altered the stories that they gathered, therefore acting as the gate way themselves because we only read their interpretation.

The Grimm's Fairy Tales are famous for being dark and sinister but still magical and entertaining enough for children. The dark cover and the lighter texture behind the gate act as the contrast between the two; so you have to see through the dark side to appreciate the magic of the tales.
